Lucca, a quintessentially Italian city

As promised in my last post, here are a few of Sam's photographs from our week in Lucca.
They were taken with his beloved digital camera (paid for by the sale of his work during Art Week last October) and his other Canon, which uses good old fashioned film! He has just started developing his own photos and we are waiting, in great anticipation, for the results of his black and white experiments.

The first is taken at the end of a sunny afternoon, from the tree-topped tower in Lucca

I love the simplicity and balance of lines, taken just before sunset, in Lucca

Sam is passionate about street photography, capturing candid shots of people going about their lives, unaware of the photographer. I think its his greatest strength and I like how he has picked out the colour orange in this one.

We were both really pleased to come upon a pavement artist in Lucca,  he has captured the curve of her body mirrored in her painting.

Whilst I was in the Uffizi Gallery, Sam found a colourful procession- such good fortune!

However, my favourite of all is this one of three men on the Ponte Vecchio in Florence

I'm so happy he let me share these and am very proud of my artistic son.


P.s. Sadly I have had to 'shrink' them for the blog, they look even more exciting full size!

    Hello Jane and Sam,

    Lucca is a beautiful city. Such quiet serenity and, everywhere one looks, there is the making of a photograph. Everyone and every bit of the place seems incredibly photogenic.

    Sam does seem to have an eye for composition. He captures special moments and, cleverly, the subjects of the photograph appear to be totally unaware of their observer. This gives the images a very real sense of place and the people are full of character.

    We love black and white photography as it always seems to be capable of highlighting the tiniest detail. Colour is such a distraction. We look forward to seeing those experiments!

      So glad you enjoyed my pictures. Lucca is a perfect city for taking photographs and with Italians being so photogenic it makes it perfect for Street Photography!

    Hello Jane

    These are fabulous images taken by Sam. He is very talented. One of my favourites is the three men on the Ponte Vecchio. I am getting homesick for Italy. Thanks for sharing these.

    Loved your last 2 posts. I am planning a trip with my 15 year old later this year leaving eldest to look after Granny. Sam has a wonderful 'eye' and I love the pavement artist photo. He is very talented and its a wonderful skill to learn. The camera is one of my favourite inventions - think how different our worlds would be without its magic. xx

      I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. I often think about how different things would be without cameras! I just love them as individual items as well as the ability to capture things with them. You can tell this because my room is overflowing with various cameras and accessories!
